About Pex
Welcome to Born Purple! My name is Upeksha Patel, though many know me simply as Pex. I’m a mother of three living in South London, and after 20 successful years in recruitment, I decided to channel my creativity into something truly special, something close to my heart and crafted especially for my children. This new venture has been a journey of passion, discovery, and a leap far outside my comfort zone!

Here's a bit about me:
I was born and raised in the UK by Indian parents, I grew up speaking Gujarati at home, which kept me connected to my heritage. Thanks to my parents’ (whom we now call Devi Ba and Dada) daily commitment, and eagerness to visit family in India every year, my brother and I became fluent and more importantly confident in speaking Gujarati. When I had children, I realised how challenging it actually is to pass on this skill to them, especially as English is the main language we all speak at home. That's when my mind started working overtime and I needed a creative solution.

Here's the How:
The idea is simple: If Parent A is Red and Parent B is Blue, combining them forms Purple. Thus, every child is, in fact, Born Purple. This concept inspired me to create a book that makes learning a second language, like Gujarati, fun and accessible for children, even in families where the parents aren’t fluent readers or writers in the language.

Here's the Why:
Communication is key in my eyes! The ability to understand and confidently speak a language sets you apart. I know many who attended Gujarati school, spending time learning to read, write, and speak, but without regular practice, confidence and sentence-building, these skills quickly fade.
Born Purple aims to overcome this by focusing on conversational learning. We empower children not only to learn but also to connect with everyday words and phrases that are relevant to their lives, helping them communicate confidently in their heritage language.
